3rd international conference of the UNESCO chair,

Rectors and presidents in charge of the different francophone higher institutions members of the Unitwin network will meet in Bordeaux (27, 28 and 29 May 2019) in order to take stock of education, training and research activities on sustainable development during the three years since the March 2016 conference and to define the 2019-2022 strategy of the chair in association with its different private and public partners. 3rd Conference of the chair (Bordeaux, 27-29 May 2019)

The 3rd conference of the Chair will bring together the heads of the 41 universities and the 21 member countries of the UNITWIN network and their institutional and non-institutional partners. The theme of the conference is "The education for sustainable development, a transition lever for our societies".

The two previous Chair Conferences had adopted a strategy set out in the framework of the United Nations Decade 2005-2014 and the Global Action Program 2015-2019 of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), implemented by UNESCO and articulated around five priority areas of action.

The aim of the May 2019 conference will be to draw on the results of the actions carried out from 2016 to 2019, to define a new strategy for the years to come in reference to the UN 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals The conference will also take into account the recommendations from major global events such as the Global Action Program (Ottawa 2017 and Costa Rica 2018) forums or the conference on global warming (COP 24 Katowice 2018).

Presentation of the UNESCO chair

Created in June 2010, the UNESCO chair "Education, training and research for sustainable development" was renewed for a four-year period in 2015. The chair is based in the Bordeaux Polytechnic Institute (Bordeaux-INP) and hosted by ENSEGID, one of the eigth graduate school of Bordeaux-INP. This renewal was accompanied by the membership of several universities from countries not represented to date in the UNITWIN network with 42 Universities and High Education institutes belonging to 21 countries.
The UNESCO chair and its UNITWIN network is designed to better mobilize the Francophone academic and scientific actors and their partners in order to enable more efficient and more visible development of policies, capacity and instruments relating to education, training and research for sustainable development.
The strategy of the UNESCO chair refers to the Global Action Programme 2015-2019 on ESD, on Education 2030 and the UNESCO Agenda on sustainable development for 2030 and its 17 sustainable development goals.  (read more…).

The UNESCO Global Action Programme for Sustainable Development

The Global Action Programme (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) generate and scale-up concrete actions in ESD. It is intended to make a substantial contribution to the post-2015 agenda. The GAP is the follow up to the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.
There is now a growing international recognition of ESD as an integral element of quality education and a key enabler for sustainable development. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the global community over the next 15 years include ESD in the targets.
In 2013, the 37th session of the General Conference of UNESCO endorsed the GAP on ESD as the follow-up to the Decade (37 C/Resolution 12). The GAP on ESD comes with a detailed implementation Roadmap. The Roadmap communicates the GAP endorsed by UNESCO Member States to decision-makers, stakeholders and actors, and provides suggestions for the implementation of the GAP, as well as details on UNESCO’s role (

17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

At the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015, world leaders adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which includes a set of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and tackle climate change by 2030.
The Sustainable Development Goals, otherwise known as the Global Goals, build on the Millennium Development Goals(MDGs), eight anti-poverty targets that the world committed to achieving by 2015.

Objectives of the chair

The project, developed as part of an extended inter-university partnership, has several objectives :

1. To train teachers in order to improve education and training on sustainable development by taking into account the specific environmental, socio-economic and cultural issues of the countries involved.

2nd Conference of the chair (Bordeaux, 14-15 March 2016)

The 2nd conference of the UNESCO Chair was held in Bordeaux on March 14 and 15, 2016. It brought together the heads of UNITWIN's 35 universities and 21 member countries, as well as their institutional and non-institutional partners.
The aim of this conference was to build on the progress of the United Nations Decade 2005-2014 for ESD and the results achieved by the Chair over the last five years, to define a new four-year strategy in reference to the United Nations "Global Action Plan for ESD" and its five priority areas of action.
The March conference also took into account the recommendations from major meetings global education forum (Korea, May 2015), the conference on climate change (COP 21 Paris, December 2015) and the implementation of the 17 Objectives of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which reflect the 8 Millennium Development Goals for Development (MDG).
In addition to the plenary sessions which made it possible to present the progress of the various actors in ESD and to consider the substantive issues related to the development of the 2016-2019 Strategy, the conference was an opportunity to hold eight thematic workshops on a variety of topics. related to sustainable development and ESD.
