First Meeting of the International Steering Group

for the End-of-United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development Conference (Japan, 2014) UNESCO, Paris September 6-7, 2011

The International Steering Group (ISG) for the preparation of the conference that will mark the end of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) in 2014 is made up of 12 experts on ESD and related fields.

The ISG, to which Michel RICARD is a member, will ensure that a maximum of expertise is mobilized for the organisation of the conference and that the concerns of all world regions as well as the full scope of ESD are reflected in the programme.

The purpose of the ISG Meeting is to discuss the conference format and programme, details of conference objectives and expected outcomes, and procedures for stakeholder involvement.

The ISG members will share their experiences as a way of capturing the richness and diversity of global ESD work and will strategize for producing tangible results from the DESD.

The First ISG meeting brought together members of the ISG and the Task Force (TF) representing the co-organizers of the End-of-DESD Conference, i.e. UNESCO and Japan.

While the End-of-Decade conference will review the progress made since the beginning of the DESD, it will also provide a springboard for post-Decade processes and frameworks to further promote ESD activities on the national, regional and international levels. When preparing the Conference, special attention will be paid to ensure that the End-of-Decade Conference not only summarize and consolidate concrete results from the DESD but also mark the beginning of a new and advanced phase of ESD implementation around the world.
